Descendants of Jan Broersen Decker

Notes

609. Ira Decker

Information on Ira Decker, Louisa (spouse), and children received from Everett Decker, except where noted:

Attached is the Family Group sheet I have so far on Ira & Louisa DECKER. I have a fair number of Censuses to support the FG sheet. As far as I know, Louisa's surname has not been identified. From the Census data I have uncovered, I don't find any indication that Ira had any other wife than Louisa.

Acording to "1744-1900 History of Norfolk" by Theron Wilmot Crissey, L.L.B. [publ. 1900](hereafter Crissey's History of Norfolk), pp 200-1 "In the north-east part of the town, near Doolittle pond, a Cemetary was opened in the early part of this century, the earliest date noticed there being...1815.... There are a large number of unmarked graves in this cemetary; the Orvis family being one it is said; persons of influence in town at one time. Also graves of twenty or more children of Ira Decker, all unmarked."

I suspect the number is slightly inflated, but I do find from Census extrapolations that Ira (& Louisa) had at least 10 children, the earliest being b. abt 1819, the latest being b. abt 1843. This would have made Ira abt 23yo for the first and Louisa abt 20yo. It's possible they could have lost one before then.
On the other end, in 1843 Louisa would have been 44 y.o. & pretty much at the other end of child beariong age. (Also we have 1850 Census by then with more detail).
From the spacing of the 'known' children (i.e. 1819, 1825, 1826, 1829, 1835, 1836, 1837, 1839, 1842, & 1843) it is entirely likely that they had children who did not survive childhood in at least some of the following years; 1817/8, 1821, 1823, 1827/8, 1831, 1833, 1840/1. That puts the count at POSSIBLY as many as 17, plus or minus.

612. Uri (Uriah) Decker

Notes from Everett Decker:

I did a little Census work on Uri & Experience (BAKER) DECKER.

I found them both in 1850, 1860, 1870, & 1880 Censuses in Adrian, Lenawee Co., MI. It appears as though they went out there circa 1833-4.

Experience's brother Norton lived next door to them in 1850 & 1860 with his wife Almeda & their (at least) 9 children.

Experience was the daughter of Joseph Martin (1780-1872) & Sallie (CRUTHERS) BAKER (1778-1851).

LENAWEE COUNTY

2. Decker Site, Northwest of Adrian, Adrian Township, Section 7, T. 6 5., R. 3 E. (New Historical Atlas of Lenawee County Michigan 1874, 69). Age: late Pleistocene. Material: cranium, 5 molars, tusks, scapulae, humeri, radius, carpals, metacarpals, 3 ribs, femora, tibiae, fibula, calcanea, tarsals, metatarsals, 2 caudal vertebrae. These elements were found two feet below the surface of a small peat bog (Winchell 1864) on the farm of Uri Decker. Remarks: This site was reported by Hay (1923), MacAlpin (1940) and Winchell (1864). Hay (1923, 40) incorrectly listed the Range as 4 East. MacAlpin (1940, 488) listed the locality as being "seven miles northeast" of Adrian but provided the correct section and township information. Hay (1923, 81) reported that "in the U. S. National Museum (No. 188) there is a lower jaw of a mastodon found...in the same locality as the Decker mastodon." This lower jaw and the above-listed skeletal elements probably belong to the same animal. Winchell (1864, 223) stated that many years a go the place was known as a "deer lick." Literature: Hay (1923); MacAlpin (1940); Winchell (1864).

Reference in 1888 biography implies that he was still alive then (parents had 8 children, all married).
However
Reference in 1879 biography mentions that parents had ten children.

Edward & Edwin listed in 1850 census as two individuals, but Edward does not appear through 1860-1880 census.

Perhaps about 1856 - surmised due to brother Sydney naming first child Uriah Edward

627. Jacob P Decker

Evidence suggests that Jacob was married before Sarah Bovee, and had a child Minard Decker by this first wife.

I believe that means he must have been b. after 10 June 1827, otherwise
he would have been on the will, since Philip Warner says he lists all his
legal heirs.

unknown Decker = Abram B. Decker - Jacob

Philip Decker b. bef. 10 Jun 1827

Michael first, and then the children of Jacob in birth order.)

Believe this is the John Decker listed under Gylbert Graves, his first cousin

Previously listed under wrong regiment (was regiment his brother Isaac was in).

Possible John D. Decker enlisted as Private on 25 Sept 1861 (age of 18), then in 7th Calvalry Regiment New York on 6 November 1861, Died of disease 27 December 1861 in Regimental Hospital.

Date is likely incorrect, as John W. Decker enlisted 17 May 1861 (age 23), disability discharge 10 November 1861, Upton's Hill, VA

Died of Disease, Died in Hospital
