MOTLEY -- Helen Converse, 81, Motley, died Monday July 15, 2002, at the Staples Care Center.

She was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Brainerd to Herman and Hazel (Milender) Allguer. She attended a country school in May Township in Cass County. She graduated from Motley High School in 1938. She married Ernest Converse on Feb. 9, 1942. For many years, she worked at El Ray, sewed for Munsingwear in Little Falls and farmed. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Motley, the Leader/Poplar Birthday Club and the Dutch Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Beverly Converse, Schaumburg, Ill., Judy Marsh, Backus, and Patty Converse, Motley; a son, Larry Converse, Motley; her longtime friend, Ernest Converse Sr.; a sister, Evelyn White, Staples; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

A sister, Ethel Wheeler; a brother, Virgil; a son, Ernest Jr.; and a grandson died earlier.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Motley United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard F. Collman officiating. Burial will follow in the Motley Public Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.

James F. Decker moved to Michigan when he was 19 years old. He was employed as a lumberman in the Michigan woods. After marrying Eliza Brines in Rhodes, Michigan, they moved to Midland from Gladwin county. James was a painter and was employed for 25 years at the Dow Chemical Company. When he first worked at Dow, there were only 278 men on the payroll, he used to tell friends.

David Kuhn, Midland, pleaded not guilty in Bay City late yesterday to a charge of negligent homicide brought against him as driver of an automobile which crashed into a culvert early Tuesday morning, killing Floyd Decker, 26, this city, and seriously injuring Leon Penney, 26, also of this city. Both were with him in the machine.

The crash happened about five o'clock Tuesday morning two miles east of Auburn on the Bay City pavement when the car left the highway, ploughed along on the shoulder for about 200 feet and struck a culvert on the north side of the road.
(continues) Decker was killed instantly, it is believed his neck fractured.
(continues) Questioned, he (Kuhn) said a flat tire had caused the accident.

Lucius Decker of Westerlo, father of the late Albany County Sheriff Foster Decker, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nora Tuttle, Pittsfield, Mass, Saturday, Apr. 3.
Funeral service, with Rev. Donald Boyce of the Westerlo Reformed church officiating, was held Tuesday afternoon at the Cunningham Funeral Home, Greenville. Interment was in Indian Fields cemetery, Alcove.
Mr. Decker was born in the town of Rensselaerville Sept 5, 1863, son of the late Wesley and Mary Hope Fox Decker.
Surviving in addition to his daughter are one son, Huyler Decker, Berne, RFD; one brother, Arthur Decker, Tacoma, Wash; one half sister, Mrs. Mary Woodruff, Medusa; two half brothers, Bert Gifford of Medusa and James Gifford, Rensselaerville; two grandchildren, James Decker of Westerlo and Mrs. Hazel Lossi of Albany; also two great-grandchildren.
