Our beloved mother and grandmother was a woman of faith and charity all the days of her life. She had a strong and steady testimony of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her mother and other family members were original Pioneers who came through the "hole in the rock" over the Colorado River to Bluff, UT. Mom was an example of service, goodness, patience, cheerfulness, generosity, and was happiest when surrounded by her family. She radiated love and joy. Those who knew her considered her to be a genuine, "real lady." Mom and Dad were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1932. They were busily involved with the Excelcis Beauty Cosmetics Company while raising their five children. In their later years they served a mission in Nauvoo, Ill. Reed passed away in Sept. 1984. The bonds of friendship with neighbors, friends, family and those in their study clubs were among their most treasured memories.

In 1989, Jody, at the age of 75, married Henry A. Matis, age 84. They had 10 wonderful years together, including a mission to Tampa, Fl. The union of these two families was a blessing. Henry passed away in Sept. 1999.

Henry A. Matis children:

Betty (Cal) Packard

A special thanks to Linda McNitt, who helped us love and care for our mother this last year in her home. Thanks to those at Garden Terrace for their tender care.

Obituary: Henry A. Matis
Henry A. Matis, 94, died Sept. 5, 1999 at the Woodland Park Care Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was born of Finnish parents, Isaac and Mary Makynen Matis in Telluride, Colo., June 19, 1905. Henry started life with no assets or advantages, except for his intelligence and perseverance. Raised by a mother who desired more in life for her child than what a mining town could offer, Henry graduated from the University of Colorado with an electrical engineering degree. He married Vera Grace McCabe, June 8, 1928. She died Aug. 2, 1932 upon the birth of her second child. He was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1933. He married May Pace on June 8, 1936. They had three more children together. She died June 28, 1987. He married Josephine Wood Fairbanks June 23, 1989.

Henry held many responsible positions working for Westinghouse, the Pullman Standard Car Manufacturing Co. and the U.S. Government at Hill Air Force Base. He served his community on the Weber County School Board for 16 years, and on the State Board of Education. He loved Scouting, and received the Silver Beaver Award. Wherever he saw a need he volunteered his help.

He served as Bishop, Stake President of both the Lakeview and Roy Stakes, Regional Representative, and Temple Sealer. He was called as the first President of the Helsinki, Finland Mission in 1947, and served for seven years in that capacity. That experience infused the rest of his life with a love and concern for missionaries and church members in Finland.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine one daughter, Betty Belle Packard (F. Calvin) Springville, UT four sons, Frederick William (Marilyn) Santa Clara, CA, John A. (Nadine) Ogden, UT, James Henry (Jeanette) College Station, TX Bruce Allen (Joan) Indianapolis, IN, 23 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild his wife's five children, Lynn (Carol) Fairbanks, Patricia (Robert) Wells, Fred (Carrol) Fairbanks, Richard (Nadine) Fairbanks, Mark (Janice) Fairbanks and the extended Fairbanks family twin brothers, Arvo (Virginia) Durango, CO and Wilho (Emma) Durango, CO and other extended family members.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, at the Forest View Ward, 2815 So. 1100 East, Salt Lake City. He was laid to rest at the Roy City Cemetery.
